World Record: South Africa’s Wayde van Niekerk Smashes 17 Year Old Record

The 24-year-old South African has broken a 17 year record held by Michael Johnson in the world men’s 400m race at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Wayde van Niekerk ran 43.03 sec to break the world record to break the previous world record of 43.18 sec by Michael Johnson in 1999.

Before his heat, he was not tipped among favorites to win gold in the men’s 400m race this year. However, the win has brought him to the lime light and pundits believe he could stage a major upset in this years’ summer Olympics.
